Hydrothermal Explosion Rattles Yellowstones Biscuit Basin

Hydrothermal Explosion Rattles Yellowstone's Biscuit Basin

Powerful Eruption Caught on Video, Triggers Closures

A surprise eruption in Yellowstone National Park on Tuesday sent geyser water, dark-colored rock, and dirt high into the sky, casting a plume of steam over the scene. The explosion occurred in the Biscuit Basin area just north of the popular Old Faithful geyser, prompting park officials to close the area to visitors.

Localized Hydrothermal Explosion

According to a news release from Yellowstone National, the explosion occurred at approximately 10:19 AM on Tuesday, July 23. It was described as a "localized hydrothermal explosion," which typically results from the interaction of groundwater with hot rocks deep beneath the Earth's surface.

Dramatic videos captured the eruption, showing a column of boiling water, mud, and rock shooting hundreds of feet into the air. The force of the explosion sent sightseers running for safety.
