Air New Zealand Scraps 2030 Carbon Emissions Reduction Targets

Air New Zealand Scraps 2030 Carbon Emissions Reduction Targets

No More Ambitious Goals

Air New Zealand has become the first major airline to abandon its ambitious carbon emissions reduction targets. The airline had previously pledged to reduce its carbon intensity by 28% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels.

Reasons for the Change

Air New Zealand's decision to scrap its 2030 targets is due to several factors, including:

  • Lack of availability of sustainable aviation fuels
  • Delays in the production of new, more fuel-efficient aircraft
  • The high cost of carbon offsets

The airline says that it is committed to reducing its emissions, but that it needs to take a more realistic approach in the current climate.

Withdrawal from Science Based Targets

In addition to scrapping its 2030 targets, Air New Zealand has also withdrawn from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The SBTi is a global body that helps companies set science-based emissions reduction targets.

Air New Zealand's decision to withdraw from the SBTi has been met with criticism from environmental groups. They argue that the airline is not taking climate change seriously enough.

What's Next for Air New Zealand?

Air New Zealand says that it is still committed to reducing its emissions, but that it will need to take a more gradual approach. The airline is exploring a number of options, including:

  • Investing in sustainable aviation fuels
  • Buying more fuel-efficient aircraft
  • Improving operational efficiency

Air New Zealand is also working with the government and other stakeholders to develop a roadmap for achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
